These are some of the new video games presented at Gamescom 2023. Gamescom 2023 is the new edition of the recently held fair in Cologne, Germany. The event to be followed considering that in recent years, in terms of digital entertainment, it is the most important event in the annual calendar.
Of course, video games are the big star of the fair. They continue to rake in tons of dollars and, in addition to software, they play a vital role in selling personal computers, components, peripherals, and accessories promoted under the Gaming label.
The conferences before Gamescom saw some progress, mainly from NVIDIA, with the presentation of DLSS 3.5, the development of Half-Life 2 RTX or the agreement with Microsoft to bring its titles to the game service (NVIDIA cloud, GeForce Now). Some new monitors or technologies were also seen, such as the so-called HDR10+ Gaming.
Gamescom 2023, the best games
Although (not all) of the major game distributors held private conferences, the starting point of the fair is usually an Opening Light Live, which always leaves us with many announcements, release dates for popular and new games.
- Starfield. There’s not much to say about Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG, the next big triple-A to hit the market after the excellent Baldurs Gate 3 and showing signs of growth. Coming soon, September 6th for PC and Xbox. It looks very good, but let’s see how it is optimized and whether it lives up to the promises of a “big” game.
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare III. The new chapter in the saga of first-person shooters, one of the most successful and most played in multiplayer history. Released on November 10th: PC (Steam and Battle.net), PS4 and PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
- Diablo IV – Season of Blood. With Season 1 of ‘Evil’ still underway, Blizzard has announced the next, ‘Season of Blood’ starting on October 17, close to Halloween, to extend the action role-playing title’s run. Season 2 will introduce a new plot, vampire powers, 5 new final bosses that will drop unique and ultra-unique items as loot to create new builds, and we know regular bug fixes and class leveling.
- Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Another one expected for next fall will be the next installment in Ubisoft’s action-adventure saga. And it will be more than just a video game that the production company promises, with a History of Baghdad that will bring us closer to an exciting time like no other game: the Abbasid Caliphate. It will be available on October 12, 2023 for PC, PlayStation 5, PS4, Amazon Luna, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One and in three editions, standard, deluxe and collector’s, which can be pre-ordered now.
- Lords of the Fallen. A third-person action game that is the successor to the 2014 title of the same name, but built from scratch with Unreal Engine 5. If you like the Soulsborne style of Dark Souls, this will have a lot going for it. Available October 13, 2023 for Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and Series S.
- Cyberpunk 2077 – Phantom Liberty. An expansion of the action role-playing first-person shooter title, which promised a lot, but arrived in a rather poor state. It has improved a lot since launch and along with the expansion content CD Projekt will be updating the game to version 2.0.
- The sequel to Mortal Kombat 1. MK11 will be the twelfth installment of one of the most popular fighting games. Another reboot of the series that will also include some revamped iconic characters from the franchise (Li Mei, Tanya, Baraka, Reptile, Ashrah, Havik…), several cameos, story mode, offline play and online multiplayer. The premiere is scheduled for September 19.
- Destiny 2 – The Final Shape. Bungie has announced the details and pre-orders for Destiny 2’s upcoming expansion ‘The Final Shape’, which will be released on February 27, 2024. It also introduced new gameplay footage and key storylines that will lay the groundwork for Destiny 2’s final expansion. “Light and Darkness” saga, as well as several important features coming to the game next year.
- Age of Empires 4: Anniversary Edition. Microsoft took advantage of Gamescom 2023 to announce the launch of the real-time strategy game on the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles and its inclusion in the Xbox Game Pass catalog. Arguably, they promise a controller design optimized specifically for the type of game best played on PC.
- Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin. A real-time strategy game that confirms that the Warhammer name remains a benchmark in the industry. And we already know the release date: November 17, 2023.
- Tekken 8 Fighting game single player arcade mode and release date confirmation: January 26, 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
- Alan Wake 2 – The Dark Place. Remedy’s next horror game is a first-person nightmare it shows us what life can be like. Dark and Spectacular should be coming to Xbox Series X, PS5, and PC on October 27th.
- Little Nightmares III. An adventure, platform and puzzle game set in a horror world by Namco Bandai. The biggest novelty is that we can play with a friend in cooperative mode. It will arrive in 2024.
