The role of youth in the face of the ecosocial crisis

We are facing an unprecedented loss of biodiversity. When youth take to the streets to protest in defense of the environment, they are also doing so in defense of life and their right to exist.

One realizes the entire problem, which together forms the ecosocial crisis, and of which climate change is undoubtedly the tip of the iceberg, but it is also the problem that accelerates the rest.

When you reach the level of awareness, it is very difficult to leave and you begin to fight from this broader paradigm that is the ecosocial crisis.

When we talk about the environment, we really don’t realize the severity and urgency of the situation. When these people demand a planet, a healthy environment, they are simply demanding the right to live.

Already in 2019, the World Economic Forum published a report according to which the climate crisis represents a greater risk to humanity than the use of weapons of mass destruction.

However, at a social level it is being responded to differently depending on the sectors. There is an elite that is clinging to climate inaction, even denialism, which is simply murderous. Killer of ecosystems and life itself. For example, there is data such as that one hundred companies have produced 71% of greenhouse emissions since 1986. However, it is an elite that remains inactive.

The ecosocial crisis

It seems like the great theater in the world: a big stage, people applauding, lights and a battery of media ready to shoot and take a photo of the key moment of the speech. where is that speech going? Because to talk we have demonstrations, meetings, conferences, however, in those moments, where the future of the planet, the future of its people and all living beings, really has to be negotiated, there is no word at those tables. But it doesn’t just happen with young people, it also happens with civil society, with scientists, even with country delegations.

When youth burst onto the scene of climate change and the ecological crisis, it seemed that a certain awareness and a certain ambition and political capital were generated that were not there before to make transformations at all levels. However, it was soon demonstrated that it had been a collective dream, built and fed from the political, media and even the social side, but that when it came to social and economic transformations, which is the only thing that can solve the current situation, it did not. It has been seen that there has been no substantial change.
